Abstract

Ultraviolet-C (UVC) sourced has been widely used for the purpose of disinfection due to its germicidal spectrum. In this study, the effectiveness of Everlight’s 275 nm Ultraviolet-C surface mounted device (UVC-SMD) to disinfect Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was investigated at three exposure durations (10, 30 and 60 s) for a standard distance of 5 cm. The inhibition zones were greater with the increment of exposure duration. The highest records of 4.53 ± 0.03 cm were achieved when 102 mJ/cm² of dose was applied at a distance of 5 cm for 60 s. Whereas, on the other side, the lowest inhibition was seen when the exposure was set for 10 s. Thus, the Everlight 6565 UVC-SMD with 275 nm of wavelength is capable in providing bacterial disinfection which could possibly be used for the development of disinfection system based on SMDs at longer exposure duration.

Author Biographies

Tian Swee Tan, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Tan Tian Swee received his Masters and Doctorate certification back in the year 2004 and 2008 from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, respectively. His research area encompasses the area of Digital Signal Processing and Electrical Mechatronics and has in excess of 57 indexed publications in high impact factor journals and various other publications in non-ordered journals, conference proceedings and book chapters subsequently establishing his expertise in the domain. He has spearheaded numerous projects and has obtained renowned awards from various sources, and one of his notable striking achievements is the collaboration between UTM and IJN. He is presently serving as Associate Professor at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, UTM, and furthermore fills in as a Director in the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering. He has in excess of more than 24 PhD and 19 MSc graduates on his portfolio. His extra portfolio incorporates being an member from the Medical Device and Technology Group (MediTEG) and Frontier Materials Research alliance. He has additionally been awarded various awards both at public and global level for different projects.

Syafiqah Saidin, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Syafiqah Saidin received her BEng and PhD from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Malaysia, in 2009 and 2013, re- spectively. She is a well-trained engineering researcher, holding position of Senior Lecturer at FBME and Director of the IJN-UTM Cardiovascular Engineering Center, UTM, Malaysia. She is a certified Human Resources and Development Fund (HRDF) trainer with a certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Higher Education Teaching, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Practice (CPR). She has been exposed to education and engineering tasks such as R&D and high impact Journal publication. Her area of expertise lies in biomaterials, antibacterial agent, biomimetic, surface modification and characterization, and implant coating.

Sameen Ahmed Malik, University Engineering Technology, Lahore

Sameen Ahmed Malik received BEng degree from the University of South Wales, UK, in 2012. He completed his doctorate from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He is currently working as Assistant Professor at UET, Narowal, Lahore, Pakistan. His research interests include antimicrobial, healthcare disinfection, and medical device development.

Matthias Tiong Foh Thye, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Matthias Tiong Foh Thye was born in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, in 1994. He received the B. Eng (Electrical- Engineering) degree from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Malaysia, in 2018 and is currently pursuing the Ph.D degree in biomedical en- gineering at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Malaysia. He is conducting the research on the wireless power transfer for bio- medical application. His research interests are in human tissue dielectric properties, electromagnetic safety, and image processing.

Jia Hou Tan, Southern University College, Malaysia

Ts. Dr. Tan Jia Hou CEng received his Bachelor in Engineering (Electrical-Mechatronics) and Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering from University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Malaysia in year 2016 and 2020 with ERAMUS+ research attachment at Center for Biomedical Technology of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain. His current role in Southern University College is Assistant Professor where I have deliver Electrical-Electronics core-subjects lecturing, Final Year Student Project Supervisor,  Task Coordinator for Research Centre , Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) & Engineering Technology Accreditation Council (ETAC) documentation, Industrial Training, External Collaboration and MyRA documentation.
